LAPD makes arrests at rat-infested encampment near downtown LA

LAPD officers from Rampart Station arrested multiple people on felony and misdemeanor charges Sunday at a rat-infested homeless encampment west of downtown Los Angeles that had completely blocked a public sidewalk, ABC7 Los Angeles reported.

The enforcement action highlights how encampment conditions — pest infestations and blocked sidewalks — have drawn increased scrutiny from city officials, with authorities citing particular concern for disabled residents who depend on unobstructed pedestrian paths.

Officers from LAPD's Rampart Division responded to the site west of downtown Los Angeles, where they documented a severe rat infestation and debris that left no room for foot traffic on the sidewalk, according to a report by ABC7 Los Angeles published May 24, 2026, at abc7.com.

Authorities stated the conditions posed a particular risk to people with disabilities, noting that fully obstructed walkways leave those who rely on clear paths of travel with no viable alternative, the ABC7 report said.

The operation resulted in multiple felony and misdemeanor arrests, as well as additional citations issued to individuals at the encampment, according to ABC7 Los Angeles. The station did not name those taken into custody or specify the exact charges in its initial report.

ABC7 Los Angeles did not report how many individuals remained at the encampment after the sweep, or whether city sanitation crews were dispatched to address the remaining health hazards at the location.

The ABC7 Los Angeles report, published Sunday at abc7.com, did not specify whether city sanitation or outreach services were requested to address conditions that remained at the encampment following the arrests.
