Ghirardelli recalls hot cocoa, frappé mixes over salmonella risk

Ghirardelli recalled several powdered beverage mixes, including hot cocoa and frappé products, after a contaminated powdered milk ingredient used in the products was linked to a potential salmonella risk, ABC7 Los Angeles reported Sunday.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the affected products. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which is overseeing the recall, advises consumers to discard the products or return them for a refund.

Ghirardelli traced the contamination risk to a powdered milk ingredient that had been separately recalled by its supplier, according to ABC7 Los Angeles. The company then issued its own recall covering the affected beverage mixes sold in the United States.

The recall includes multiple products in the Ghirardelli line — among them various hot cocoa and frappé mixes — the FDA said. The agency is overseeing the action.

Salmonella infection can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. The illness poses a heightened risk to young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.

As of the Sunday report, no illnesses had been linked to the products, ABC7 Los Angeles reported. Consumers with affected items are urged to stop using them immediately.
