LAPD releases bodycam footage of fatal East LA pursuit shooting

Los Angeles police Sunday released bodycam footage of a fatal officer-involved shooting that followed a stolen car pursuit in East Los Angeles, showing the suspect draw a weapon and point it at officers before being shot.

The footage, posted to LAPD's YouTube channel, provides the first public view of the April 8 confrontation that killed Jesus Ernesto Jaime, 30, at the 5 Freeway Olympic off-ramp. Two officers were injured in the exchange but were treated and released.

LAPD said in a statement posted to its YouTube channel that officers spotted the BMW and followed it onto the 5 Freeway while calling for backup. "When the BMW began to accelerate away in an apparent attempt to evade, the officers initiated a vehicle pursuit," the department said.

Jaime made a U-turn on the Olympic off-ramp and crashed the BMW into a patrol vehicle, according to police. He then exited the car and fired at officers.

"Responding officers issued verbal commands for Jaime to surrender," LAPD said. "Jaime refused to comply and instead removed a semi-automatic handgun from his waistband and pointed it at an officer, resulting in an officer-involved shooting."

Officers recovered two weapons at the scene: a 9mm Glock carrying 17 live rounds and a .357 Magnum revolver, according to ABC7 Los Angeles. A passenger in the BMW surrendered without incident and was arrested.

LAPD has not announced when its investigation into the shooting is expected to conclude or named the officers who fired.
