Miley Cyrus honors Dolly Parton at Hollywood Bowl

Miley Cyrus paid tribute to her godmother, Dolly Parton, at the Hollywood Bowl on Friday, recalling a concert she attended there before singing Parton's song Jolene, according to ABC7 Los Angeles.

The venue gave the tribute a personal connection: Cyrus said it was the only place she had seen Parton perform live. ABC7 described Friday's performance as Cyrus' first time taking the Hollywood Bowl stage.

ABC7 Los Angeles reported that Parton died in August at age 80. Its account of Friday's concert described Cyrus addressing the audience through tears before her performance of Jolene.

Recalling Parton's Hollywood Bowl concert, Cyrus said her godmother had invited her to join her onstage. She declined because she wanted to watch as a fan, according to ABC7.

Cyrus told Friday's audience that she felt Parton's presence more strongly than ever and believed their bond would endure, the outlet reported.

In an Instagram announcement about her album and the Hollywood Bowl performance, Cyrus described the venue as a favorite place to hear music. She said she had often been in the audience but had not previously performed there, according to ABC7.

For Cyrus, the appearance brought a change in perspective at a familiar venue: She had once chosen a seat in the audience to watch Parton. On Friday, she honored her godmother from the stage.
