Tesla plunges 300 feet off Mulholland Highway cliff in Malibu

A Tesla plunged 300 feet off Mulholland Highway in Malibu around 7:30 a.m. Friday, sending both occupants to a trauma center by helicopter after rescue crews rappelled down the cliff to reach them, ABC7 Los Angeles reported.

The crash on the winding canyon road — known for sharp curves and sheer drop-offs — left both a male driver and a female passenger with moderate injuries. No cause had been determined as of Friday morning.

The Tesla went off Mulholland Highway at approximately 7:30 a.m., plunging down a 300-foot cliff, according to ABC7 Los Angeles. The cause of the crash had not been determined by Friday morning.

When Malibu Search and Rescue crews reached the scene, "the driver of the Tesla was outside of the vehicle, yelling for help," according to a Malibu Search and Rescue incident report as cited by ABC7 Los Angeles. The male driver had exited the vehicle before crews arrived.

A female passenger, however, remained pinned inside the Tesla at the base of the cliff. Rescue crews rappelled down the steep drop to reach her and extracted both occupants from the crash site.

Both the driver and the passenger sustained moderate injuries, ABC7 Los Angeles reported. The two were airlifted to a nearby trauma center for treatment.

No information on the identities of either occupant was released Friday morning.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation Friday, and no further details had been released by authorities.
