Police say father fatally shoots suspected gunman at Oregon school

A father of two students fatally shot a suspected gunman at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend on Thursday, police said, after a shooting that killed three children and a teacher. Another student and teacher were critically injured, according to authorities.

The police account described interventions by both a parent and a teacher as the shooting unfolded, ABC7 Los Angeles reported. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the father's actions saved lives.

Police identified the parent as Kaylub Giamanco, 36, according to ABC7 Los Angeles. His family identified him Friday as a lifelong Bend resident whose two daughters attend the school.

Krantz said Giamanco saw the suspect fire at a truck outside before following him into the building. Police said Giamanco fatally shot the suspect in a special needs classroom.

A teacher also tried to disarm the shooter, police said. She threw her cellphone at him, tackled him and struggled for his firearm. Authorities did not publicly identify her and said she was uninjured.

Teacher Megan Lambert, 25, was among those killed, ABC7 Los Angeles reported. Authorities said another teacher and a student were critically injured. Police described the suspected shooter as a teen.

Giamanco's family said he had been driving nearby when he heard a commotion and ran into the school. The family also confirmed that he has a concealed carry permit, according to the report.

In a statement to ABC News, Giamanco's family said he was overwhelmed and regretted that he could not save more lives. The family said he was not seeking recognition and thanked first responders, school personnel and the community for their support.
