Domestic violence suspect surrenders after South Gate chase, standoff

A domestic violence suspect was taken into custody Monday morning after leading Los Angeles police on a vehicle pursuit and a 20-minute armed standoff at an apartment complex in South Gate, according to ABC7 Los Angeles.

The confrontation in South Gate, located in Los Angeles County just north of the Orange County border, underscores how swiftly a domestic disturbance call can escalate into a dangerous armed standoff requiring multiple use-of-force tools.

Officers responded to a possible domestic violence call at about 7:15 a.m. and initiated a vehicle pursuit of the suspect, ABC7 Los Angeles reported. The chase concluded at an apartment complex on Elizabeth Street in South Gate.

Once cornered, the suspect brandished what appeared to be a butcher knife and behaved erratically, according to ABC7 Los Angeles. Officers deployed a spike strip at the property's driveway entrance in an effort to prevent the vehicle from being used as a weapon.

Police then fired a less-than-lethal round at the suspect. Despite being struck, the suspect drove a car over the spike strip and advanced toward patrol units, the outlet reported.

After approximately 20 minutes of standoff, the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody. No injuries to officers or bystanders were immediately reported, according to ABC7 Los Angeles.

The suspect's identity and the specific nature of the original domestic violence call had not been publicly released as of Monday morning, according to ABC7 Los Angeles.
