Hot air balloon breaks loose, crashes into Elk Grove casino during hotel event

A hot air balloon broke free from its tethers Monday during a hotel groundbreaking ceremony in Elk Grove and struck a building at Sky River Casino before the pilot landed safely in an open field, ABC7 Los Angeles reported.

The roughly 20-minute incident underscores the risks of deploying tethered balloon displays at outdoor public ceremonies when wind conditions are unpredictable — a safety concern relevant to large event venues across California and the broader region.

The balloon had been set up as a tethered display for a hotel groundbreaking event in Elk Grove when high winds broke it free from its moorings Monday, forcing the pilot into unscheduled free flight, ABC7 Los Angeles reported.

Once loose, the balloon drifted until it struck a building at Sky River Casino in the Sacramento County city, then hit a power line as it continued to descend, according to the report.

The pilot worked to control the aircraft over the course of roughly 20 minutes before guiding it down into a nearby open field, where it landed without further incident.

No injuries were reported to the pilot or anyone on the ground, according to ABC7 Los Angeles.

The pilot emerged uninjured after guiding the wayward balloon to an open-field landing, capping roughly 20 minutes of free flight that began when winds tore the craft loose from its moorings at the hotel groundbreaking, ABC7 Los Angeles reported.
