Bayer recalls travel-sized Afrin nasal spray over missing child-resistant cap

Drugmaker Bayer has recalled its 0.02 oz travel-sized Afrin Original Nasal Spray after finding the container lacks a child-resistant cap, creating a swallowing hazard for young children, ABC7 Los Angeles reported Sunday.

The recall covers only the 0.02 oz travel bottle sold through convenience stores, airports and bodegas — distribution channels common throughout Orange County — and does not affect larger Afrin sizes sold at major retailers.

Bayer announced the voluntary recall May 3, saying the small bottle's design poses a risk to young children. "The medicine comes in a container that does not have child-resistant top," the company said, according to ABC7 Los Angeles. "That poses a health risk if a child were to swallow the content."

The recalled product — the 0.02 oz travel-sized bottle — was distributed primarily through convenience stores, airports and bodegas. Bayer said the product was not stocked by major retailers such as Walmart, Target or Amazon.com.

Consumers who have the recalled bottle should throw it away immediately. Refund requests can be submitted through an online form on Bayer's website, according to ABC7 Los Angeles.

No other sizes or Afrin product lines are part of the recall.

Only the 0.02 oz travel-sized Afrin Original Nasal Spray is affected; all other Afrin products and sizes remain on shelves.
