Suspect arrested in Playa del Rey crash that killed toddler, uncle

Los Angeles police arrested a suspect Wednesday in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a 1-year-old boy and his 25-year-old uncle in the Playa del Rey neighborhood, ABC7 Los Angeles reported.

The arrest, confirmed Wednesday by LAPD's West Traffic Division, came three days after a speeding white Jeep SUV struck a family sedan just after 4:30 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Vista Del Mar Avenue and Culver Boulevard, killing two and injuring two others.

The Sandoval family was heading home from a beach outing when a white Jeep SUV slammed into the passenger side of their sedan at the Vista Del Mar Avenue and Culver Boulevard intersection, according to ABC7 Los Angeles. The crash occurred just after 4:30 a.m. Sunday in the Playa del Rey neighborhood.

Roger Sandoval, 1, and his uncle Oswaldo Sandoval, 25, were both pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicle's driver, Oscar Sandoval — the child's father — suffered a broken rib. A 15-year-old family member in the car was severely injured, ABC7 reported.

The suspect driver fled the scene on foot immediately after the collision. A witness captured video of the driver running away, footage that assisted investigators in identifying a suspect. LAPD's West Traffic Division announced the arrest Wednesday.

Oscar Sandoval recounted the horrific moments following the crash in an interview with ABC7. He said the suspect "tried to get me" in the immediate aftermath, and described what he found when he returned to check on his passengers. "Then I see my brother, his face, his chest... God, it's hard," Sandoval said, according to ABC7.

A GoFundMe campaign was established to support the Sandoval family as they cope with the losses from the crash.

LAPD's West Traffic Division is leading the investigation into the crash. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help the Sandoval family cover expenses following the losses, according to ABC7 Los Angeles.
