20 SoCal student-athletes get $500K grants on Gianna Bryant's 20th birthday

Twenty student-athletes from Los Angeles and Orange counties received educational grants totaling $500,000 Sunday from the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation, in a ceremony timed to honor what would have been Gianna Bryant's 20th birthday, ABC7 Los Angeles reported.

The awards, administered through the California Community Foundation and local Boys & Girls Club affiliates, place Orange County student-athletes directly in the foundation's giving circle — a meaningful investment for young athletes across the region who embody resilience and family values.

The 20 recipients were selected for demonstrating resilience, teamwork and family values — qualities the foundation associates with Gianna Bryant's legacy, according to ABC7 Los Angeles. Orange County student-athletes were among those honored, giving the awards direct significance for the local community.

"Congratulations to all of our 2026 Scholars! We are deeply honored to invest in your future," the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation said in an Instagram post cited by ABC7 Los Angeles.

The foundation also addressed Gianna personally in the same statement. "And to our Gigi, Happy 20th Birthday! Your vision, your spirit, and your beautiful heart continue to light the way," the organization said.

The grants were distributed in partnership with the California Community Foundation and local Boys & Girls Club affiliates, extending the foundation's educational reach across both Los Angeles and Orange counties.
