FDA classifies Gatorade recall over undeclared dyes

PepsiCo has voluntarily recalled 122,021 cases of 28-ounce Gatorade bottles distributed in 37 states, including California, because the products contain undeclared Yellow No. 5 and/or Yellow No. 6, according to ABC7 Los Angeles.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration classified the action as a Class II recall, a category for products that may cause temporary or medically reversible health effects, or where the chance of serious harm is remote.

ABC7 Los Angeles reported that the recall covers Gatorade Lemon Lime, Gatorade Lemon Lime Zero, Gatorade Orange and Gatorade Orange Zero in 28-ounce bottles.

PepsiCo began the voluntary recall Sept. 25, and the FDA classified it Oct. 2 through its enforcement report, according to ABC7 Los Angeles. The recall remains ongoing.

The affected products were distributed in 37 states, including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida, Texas, North Carolina and California, ABC7 Los Angeles reported.

According to the FDA enforcement report cited by ABC7 Los Angeles, no press release has been issued for the recall.

Consumers can check whether their products are included by reviewing the lot numbers listed in the recall notice, according to ABC7 Los Angeles.

The FDA enforcement report says the recall was prompted by undeclared Yellow No. 5 and/or Yellow No. 6 in the affected Gatorade products.
