Hanford man kills ex-wife's boyfriend, shoots himself as police arrive

A 33-year-old convicted felon forced his way into a Hanford home early Sunday and fatally shot 25-year-old boxer Adrian Valdovinos before killing himself as officers arrived at the scene, Hanford Police said.

The killing — Hanford's third homicide of 2026 — raised immediate questions about how suspect Vincent Diaz, a convicted felon barred by law from possessing firearms, obtained a high-capacity weapon. Police said Diaz and Valdovinos had no prior conflict; their only connection was Diaz's ex-wife.

Diaz parked his vehicle roughly 100 yards from the home near University and Stanford Avenue and approached on foot before forcing his way inside, ABC7 Los Angeles reported. He shot Valdovinos — who had been dating Diaz's ex-wife — and killed him. Diaz and Valdovinos had no previous conflict, according to police.

Officers responding to a call arrived within minutes and went directly to the front door. "When officers arrived on scene, the first two officers went up to the front door, announced themselves, saw a male walk by a window, and then pulled a gun and shot himself," Hanford Police Lt. Justin Vallin told ABC7 Los Angeles.

The sequence of events unfolded with striking speed. "It happened very fast. As soon as the officers went up to the residence, they knocked, they announced themselves. Immediately they saw the suspect walk from one side to another side," Vallin said. The entire incident lasted less than 10 minutes.

According to ABC7 Los Angeles, Diaz and his ex-wife had separated in August 2025, and she obtained a restraining order against him in March 2026 involving their child. Investigators are examining how Diaz — legally prohibited from possessing a firearm as a convicted felon — acquired the high-capacity weapon used in the shooting.

Neighbors described the household as lively and warm before the tragedy. "You used to be able to hear all of them all of the time, singing, and having a great time in the house and all of that, so for this to happen is just.. It's sad to see," said Craig Avila, a neighbor. His wife, Kelly Avila, added, "Yeah, it's gonna be a little different now... we would hear their voices and now we're not gonna hear that."

Hanford Police said the investigation remains ongoing. No officers were injured in the incident. Valdovinos was described by the community as a well-known and talented young boxer.
