Minjung Park, a visitor and Korean mother from Seattle, said the experience was immediately frustrating. "The most annoying word when dealing with anything online in Korea is 'authentication,'" she said. "Why are there so many steps of verification and authentication? Drives me crazy."

A Yanolja Research analysis of English-language Reddit posts from 2023 to 2025 found 11% of posts discussing Korea mentioned inconvenience, compared with 7% for Japan. Among Korea-specific complaints, authentication barriers alone accounted for 13.1%, according to The Korea Times.

The impact is tangible at popular venues. One California visitor told The Korea Times she ran into the wall firsthand. "I tried to book discounted tickets online, but it kept asking for phone verification. In the end, I had to pay more at the entrance because I couldn't use the app," she said.

The system is rooted in South Korea's real-name registration policies, fraud prevention measures and age verification requirements — protections that function efficiently for domestic residents but create friction for those outside the local carrier framework. Many travelers work around the barrier by borrowing a Korean relative's or friend's phone number to complete transactions, The Korea Times reported.
