Weinstein gets 15 years in New York sex assault case

Harvey Weinstein was sentenced Wednesday in Manhattan to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting former TV production assistant Miriam Haley at his apartment in 2006, The Korea Times reported.

The sentence follows years of appeals and retrials in one of the defining criminal cases tied to the MeToo movement. The case is centered in New York, while Weinstein also awaits resentencing in a separate Los Angeles rape case, according to The Korea Times.

The Korea Times reported that Weinstein, 74, received the sentence after a second jury again found him guilty of assaulting Haley. He faced up to 25 years in prison and has already served more than six years as the case moved through the courts.

Haley told the court the assault changed her sense of safety and her life. "Having been sexually assaulted by Harvey Weinstein has had a devastating effect on my life and sense of security that may never go away. Making the decision to speak up will have me looking over my shoulder for years to come," Miriam Haley, a former TV production assistant and victim, said, according to The Korea Times. "It’s a life sentence for me."

Haley also said the legal process compounded the harm. "I’ve been further traumatized in exercising my right to hold him accountable. All of this traces back to his actions," Haley said, according to The Korea Times.

Weinstein denied the allegation in court. "I do have remorse for Miriam Haley’s pain, but I have to reiterate my innocence," Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced movie mogul and Oscar-winning producer, told the judge, according to The Korea Times. Defense lawyer Jacob Kaplan had asked for only 3 more years beyond time already served and said Weinstein had been hospitalized six times since 2025.

Weinstein’s 2020 conviction, which had brought a 23-year sentence, was overturned by New York's highest court. At retrial, jurors convicted him again in Haley’s case, acquitted him of forcibly performing oral sex on Kaja Sokola and deadlocked on a rape charge involving Jessica Mann, which Manhattan prosecutors later dropped after Mann said she could not testify again.

Judge Curtis Farber said Weinstein’s achievements would not define how he is remembered. Weinstein is housed at a medical unit for jail inmates at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan and is expected to appeal, The Korea Times reported.
